Fire Safety – Out of Lockdown

As business comes out of lockdown and back to some type of ‘normal’ working, whatever ‘normal’ now is, it is important that we get back to previous levels of fire safety. I have noticed whilst carrying out Fire Risk Assessments that many of the requirements of fire safety legislation are being neglected and the answer always seems to be because of Covid19!

Many businesses were indeed closed and therefore access was not possible and for this reason its understandable that maintenance regimes and staff training would not be kept up to date. Having said that a lot of non-safety maintenance was being done to keep premises ticking over. Why then, not fire safety maintenance? After all fire safety measures are considered essential during this pandemic. Fire Risk Assessments are a legal requirement for any business and where 5 or more people are employed it must be in written form.

Another consideration for a business is the view of insurance companies in connection with Fire Risk Assessments, as a legal requirement they must be carried out and where they are not or are not ‘suitable and sufficient’ then insurance pay-outs could be affected or not paid at all. Business has suffered enough during the Covid19 restrictions without the prospect of a fire adding further pain with no recompense. Now is the time to get fire safety considerations up to speed.

Get a Fire Risk Assessment or review it to ensure it is still current, catch up on the maintenance of life-safety systems and do your best to provide as safe an environment for your staff and customers. Staff training is an important aspect of fire safety and Fire Awareness and Fire Warden training can be carried out using online facilities such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams until we get back to classroom-type courses.
